Creating collections that engage young minds on crucial themes is an effective way to educate the next generation, and to amplify the voices of those experiencing the impacts of climate change.
When it comes to the climate crisis, ‘literacy’ is about so much more than learning an alphabet. In addition to assisting with learning to read, high-quality climate-focussed reading material can present young readers with critical messaging around climate science, social and emotional learning, resilience strategies and adaptation tools.

Books are the foundation of all literacy — but they are also the source of all knowledge. When children read stories that not only reflect their own lives but offer useful information they become empowered members of their communities with greater resilience.
Library For All has published books about climate change and natural hazards like drought, flood, storms, volcanoes and earthquakes in nine languages. These series include information books that highlight the facts of earth science and enjoyable fiction stories about recycling and sustainability.
“I wrote a book called Two Silly Frogs that addresses climate change — an issue that my country takes very seriously because our Islands are vulnerable to the drastic effects of climate change.”
21-year-old Caroline, young author from the Solomon Islands
