Psychosocial Support

Social and emotional learning teaches children how to recognise and manage different emotions and work with that knowledge in their relationships, at school and in their communities.

OUR APPROACH

CASEL Framework

Social and Emotional Learning was formalised by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning. They have created the CASEL Framework, which describes a set of check points for social and emotional wellness.

The CASEL framework defines a set of key competencies that are interpreted in a variety of ways to support many different programs globally.

Social and Emotional Wellbeing Competencies

Library For All’s Social and Emotional Learning books feature relatable, engaging stories that connect to five key social and emotional wellbeing competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making.

Self-awareness

Understanding one’s own emotions, thoughts and values, and how they influence behaviour.

Self-management

Managing one’s emotions, thoughts and behaviours effectively in different situations.

Social awareness

Understanding the perspectives of others, and empathising with them, including those from diverse backgrounds, cultures and contexts.

Relationship skills

Establishing and maintaining healthy and supportive relationships and navigating settings with diverse individuals and groups.

Responsible decision-making

Making caring and constructive choices about personal behaviour and social interactions.

CASE STUDY

Localisation in Action: Strong Like A Tree

Here are the covers of the book Strong Like A Tree for the Ukraine collection and the Swahili collection.

Each book has been localised with adaptations to content — most obvious is the language, but we also work with cultural advisors to localise illustrations.

For example, the types of trees depicted have been chosen to match common trees in these locations.

Culturally relevant books mean children’s lives are mirrored in the books they read, helping them gain literacy and develop a love of learning.
